Do you have a special interest in ruminant medicine, including herd health, nutrition and reproduction? Would you like to split your time between consultancy work and clinical work?

A truly mixed practice in the Central West region of New South Wales is has an opportunity for a vet to build on their medicine skillset and to apply these skills to the management of large ruminant production units.

New graduates are welcome to apply on the basis that they will be trained in both clinical and consultancy work. Applicants will ideally have, or be interested in attaining, PregCheck and BullCheck VBBSE Accreditation with the Australian Cattle Vets.

The position will be overseen by the practice owner, who is an experienced veterinarian and ruminant nutritionist. If you don't have any post-graduate training/qualifications in nutrition, the practice will assist you with course fees and paid time to attend residential schools to pursue this. Assistance will also be provided with any courses that add value to the services the clinic and the consultancy businesses provide.

This is a truly mixed practice servicing all species. They see a busy medical and surgical caseload comprised of 60% small animal and 40% large animal. Farm work is mainly dairy and beef cattle based. They have a growing number of equine clients and also regularly treat sheep, goats and alpacas.

The practice provides nutrition and herd health services to beef feedlots, lamb feedlots, dairies, beef/sheep grazing enterprises, and feed mills throughout Australia, with some overseas work. They also run applied research programmes. FTAI and general reproduction services are currently being offered across a large region with considerable scope to expand these services.

The role will see you working in a multi-vet team with four nurses and a practice manager. They are committed, friendly, fun, supportive and hard-working. They work together to provide a high standard of care to patients and clients. The practice owner has a wealth of mixed practice and ruminant production experience and provides assistance with cases, mentoring, support and professional development.

The base salary for new graduates is $90 000 p.a. plus vehicle allowance, clinic after-hours payments, and superannuation. A higher base salary will be negotiated with more experienced candidates, considering experience and expertise.

Full-time veterinarians work a nine-day fortnight. There are highly experienced vets and nursing staff available for support on-call and for help with regular work. In addition, an experienced mixed practice locum who has previously worked with the practice will be engaged to assist in the transition to practice of new graduates.

The clinic is well-equipped with computed radiography, iM3 dental station, small animal ultrasound, Abaxis Vetscan2 in house blood and urinalysis machines, two gaseous anaesthetic machines, multi-parameter anaesthetic monitoring, newly upgraded microscope, Reimer emasculators, new dental Powerfloat, two BCF ultrasound machines, electro-ejaculators and in field microscopy for bull testing, electric water bath and liquid nitrogen semen storage tank for AI.

Most cases are managed in-house, with easy access to pathology diagnostics and option of referral or liaising with specialist clinics when required.

Located in the central west region of New South Wales, the district offers many recreational, sporting and cultural activities. Enjoy the beautiful rural landscape, local cuisine and wineries while being just one hour from major regional centres, 2.5 hours from Canberra and Wagga and four hours from Sydney.
