An opportunity for an experienced vet has arisen at a well-established, progressive mixed practice in North Queensland. The practice services small animals, horses and beef cattle stations in the surrounding areas and beyond.

Opportunities exist for in-house training and mentorship from senior veterinary staff who hold a range of postgraduate qualifications, including multiple ANZCVS memberships. Senior veterinarians from affiliated clinics regularly visit for support and training in more advanced equine, cattle and small animal medicine and surgery, including orthopaedics.

This growing clinic sees a diverse and interesting caseload. They service a number of large properties in the area. The recent addition of stables and indoor horse crush has increased the capacity to undertake more complex equine cases.

The ideal candidate would be someone with well-developed small animal, equine and cattle skills. The role would be well suited to someone looking to increase their pregnancy and bull testing caseload. Ideally, candidates will be passionate about mixed practice and eager to take the next step in their career path. Vets should have well-developed diagnostic, surgical and client communication skills. Applicants should have the ability to relate to people from all walks of life as well as be able to work independently. A willingness to provide mentoring and support to recent graduates would be viewed favourably.

The role would suit a vet looking for a role with:

- A truly mixed caseload of beef cattle, including pregnancy testing and bull fertility testing, equine reproduction, dentistry and routine clinical work, and first opinion small animal medicine and surgery cases.

- A team of people who love their work and are appreciated and respected within the community

- The opportunity to learn and grow

A typical day at the practice may include:

- Routine and first opinion small animal consultations, including vaccinations and health checks, skin conditions, lameness, ear and eye consultations, sick animals, tick paralysis, snake bites and other emergency presentations.

- Routine small animal surgery and procedures, including desexings, lump removals, dentistry and wound treatments.

- A farm visit to a local beef producer to pregnancy test a mob of cattle, check a sore eye, assist pulling a malpresented calf, or fertility test some bulls;

- Ambulatory equine farm visits, including colic management, stitch-ups, ophthalmic conditions, vaccinations, dentistry and other first opinion visits.

The role is full time, working four days per week (7:30 am - 5:30 pm with a 1 hour lunch break). After hours is 1:4 plus some Saturday morning work when required.

On offer is a generous salary, very generous CPD (including career and life skills development), income protection insurance, AVA, VIN, CVE and Special Interest Group Membership paid. For the right candidate, partnership may be a possibility in the coming years.

The employer is willing to assist with a work permit (sponsorship) for suitable overseas candidates. Applicants must have a Bachelor of Veterinary Science (or equivalent) and be eligible for registration as a veterinary practitioner in Australia.

This is a large and well-equipped practice is brand new and was purpose-built in 2019. It is open plan with new facilities and plenty of space. Equipment includes in-house lab, digital x-ray, small and large animal ultrasound, IM3 dental, dental x-ray, indoor horse crush, mobile horse crush and dental kit including power float. They have recently added stables for the hospitalisation of horses requiring ongoing care.

Located just an hour and a half from a large coastal city, the practice location is ideal for those looking for a rustic setting close to the famous tropics and reefs of Queensland.
